It might seem to be a simple step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a strong working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his writing procedure ~600 percent by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same procedure for every new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other nicely, since I know the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I’d actually planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so that I set the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea of what each section would contain and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time because I’d set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and that I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off till I am drafting, which is when I must be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It is a more productive part of my process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
