It might look like an easy step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a solid working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600% by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same process for every single new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point with a few notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, since I understand the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had actually planned to do a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so I set off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea of what each section would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time since I’d put myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I frequently put these things off until I am drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and study process by applying this template. It is a more productive part of my procedure now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
