It might look to be an easy step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a solid working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600 percent by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every single new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point with a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, because I understand the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d really planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so that I set off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each section would contain and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time because I’d put myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally work, and I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I often put these things off until I am drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have actually overhauled my outline and study process by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of my procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
