It might seem like an easy step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a strong working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600 percent by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the same procedure for every single new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line with a few notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, because I know the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so that I put off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a good idea about what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time since I’d put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and that I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline properly. I often put off these things till I am drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of the procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, too.
