It might seem to be a simple step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a strong working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing process ~600 percent by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the same process for every new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, because I know the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d really planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so that I put off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea of what each section would contain and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time because I had set myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I often put off these things until I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and study process by using this template. It’s a more effective part of my procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
