It may seem like a simple step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a strong working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his writing process ~600% by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point using a few notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, because I know the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had actually planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so I set the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea about what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time because I had put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to the way I normally work, and that I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I often put these things off until I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve really coined my outline and research procedure by using this template. It is a more productive part of the procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
