It may seem to be a simple step. Just open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to get a solid working title and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600 percent by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the same procedure for every new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line using a few notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, since I know the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I had really planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so that I put off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea of what each section would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time since I’d put myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally work, and that I had been tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I often put off these things till I’m drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and study procedure by using this template. It is a more productive part of the process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
