It might look like a simple step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a strong working title and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his writing process ~600 percent by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same procedure for every single new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point using a few notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, because I know the structure of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I’d actually planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours just to have the outline done, so that I put off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea about what each section would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time since I had put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different process to how I normally work, and I had been tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I frequently put these things off till I’m drafting, which is when I must be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have really coined my outline and study process by using this template. It is a more effective part of my procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, too.
