It may look to be an easy step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a solid working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600 percent by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same procedure for every new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line using a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, because I know the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so I set off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea about what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time since I had set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I often put off these things until I’m drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I have really coined my outline and research procedure by using this template. It’s a more productive part of my process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
