It might look to be a simple step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a strong working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his composing procedure ~600 percent by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same process for every new article I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of every list to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, since I understand the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I’d actually planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so that I set the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea about what each section would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Even though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time because I’d put myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and that I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I often put off these things till I’m drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I have really coined my outline and research process by using this template. It’s a more effective part of the procedure now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
