It may seem like a simple step. Just open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a strong working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600% by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point using a few notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other nicely, since I know the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so I put off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea about what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time since I had put myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and I was tempted a few times to avoid the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I often put off these things till I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of the procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
