It may look like an easy step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a strong working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his writing process ~600% by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same process for every new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, because I understand the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I had actually planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so I put the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea about what each section would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time since I’d set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally do the job, and I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I often put these things off till I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and study procedure by using this template. It’s a more productive part of the procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, too.
