It might seem to be a simple step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a solid working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his composing procedure ~600% by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line with a few notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, because I understand the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I had really planned to do a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so that I set the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time because I’d put myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and that I was tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I frequently put off these things till I’m drafting, which is when I must be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I have really overhauled my outline and research process by applying this template. It is a more effective part of the process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, too.
