It may look like a simple step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a solid working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his writing process ~600% by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same process for every new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, because I understand the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I had really planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so that I put the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a good idea about what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time since I’d put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and that I was tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I often put off these things till I am drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and study process by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of my procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
