It may seem to be a simple step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a strong working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his writing process ~600% by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the same process for every single new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, since I understand the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I’d actually planned to do a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so that I set off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each section would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time because I had set myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things until I’m drafting, which is when I must be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of my procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, too.
