It may seem to be an easy step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a solid working title and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600 percent by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same process for every single new article I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line with a few notes about what I need to write in that segment. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, because I know the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I had really planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so that I put off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea about what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time since I’d set myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to the way I normally work, and that I was tempted a few times to avoid the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline properly. I often put these things off till I’m drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and research process by using this template. It is a more productive part of my process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
