It may look like a simple step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a solid working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600 percent by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same process for every single new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, since I understand the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I had really planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so that I put off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each section would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time since I’d put myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally work, and I was tempted a few times to avoid the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I often put off these things until I’m drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I have really overhauled my outline and research process by applying this template. It is a more effective part of my process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, too.
