It may seem to be an easy step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to get a solid working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his composing process ~600% by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same process for every single new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line using a few notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, because I know the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I had really planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so I put off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea about what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time since I’d set myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I frequently put off these things till I am drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of my procedure now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
