It may look to be a simple step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a solid working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing process ~600 percent by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same procedure for every new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line using a few notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, because I understand the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I had really planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours just to have the outline done, so that I set the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea of what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time since I’d put myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I often put off these things until I am drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve really coined my outline and research process by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of my process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
