It may seem to be an easy step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a strong working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600% by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same procedure for every new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, because I know the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I had really planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so I put the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea about what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time because I’d put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and that I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I often put off these things until I’m drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have really coined my outline and study process by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of my procedure now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, also.
