It may seem like a simple step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a solid working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his composing process ~600 percent by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same procedure for every new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line with a few notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other nicely, since I understand the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d really planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so I put off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each section would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time because I had put myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I often put these things off until I’m drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have actually overhauled my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of the process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, too.
