It might look like an easy step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a solid working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his composing process ~600 percent by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the same process for every new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, because I understand the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I’d really planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so that I set off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time because I’d set myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I frequently put these things off until I’m drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of the process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, also.
