It may seem like an easy step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a strong working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his writing procedure ~600 percent by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same procedure for every new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line with a few notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, because I understand the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d really planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so I put the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time because I’d put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to how I normally work, and that I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put off these things until I’m drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It is a more productive part of my procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, also.
