It might look like an easy step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a strong working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his writing process ~600 percent by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same procedure for every single new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, since I understand the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d actually planned to do a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so that I put off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea about what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time because I’d put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to the way I normally work, and that I had been tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I often put these things off until I am drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have actually overhauled my outline and study procedure by using this template. It is a more productive part of the procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, too.
