It might look to be a simple step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a solid working title and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing process ~600% by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same procedure for every new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, since I know the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I had really planned to do a complete rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so that I put the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea about what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time because I had set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline properly. I often put these things off till I am drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It is a more effective part of the procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
