It might seem like an easy step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a solid working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his writing procedure ~600 percent by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same procedure for every single new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point using a few notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, because I understand the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d really planned to do a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so I put the draft off for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea of what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time because I’d set myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and I had been tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I frequently put off these things until I am drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve really coined my outline and research procedure by using this template. It’s a more productive part of my procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
