It may look to be a simple step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a strong working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his writing procedure ~600% by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same process for every new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, since I understand the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I had actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so that I put the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a good idea about what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time because I’d set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off till I am drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have really coined my outline and research process by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of the process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
