It might seem to be a simple step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to get a strong working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could accelerate his composing process ~600 percent by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same process for every single new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line using a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, because I understand the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I’d actually planned to do a complete rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so I put off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea about what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time since I’d set myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I often put off these things till I’m drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of the process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
