It may look like an easy step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a strong working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his writing process ~600 percent by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same procedure for every new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point using a few notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, since I know the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I’d really planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so I set the draft off for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time because I had put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and that I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off till I’m drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have really overhauled my outline and research process by applying this template. It is a more effective part of the process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
