It may seem to be a simple step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a solid working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600 percent by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same procedure for every new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, since I understand the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I’d actually planned to do a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so that I put off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea of what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time since I had put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things until I’m drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve really coined my outline and research process by using this template. It is a more productive part of the procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, too.
