It may look like an easy step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a strong working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600% by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same procedure for every new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, since I know the structure of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I’d really planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so that I put the draft off for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time since I had put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally do the job, and I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put these things off till I am drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve really coined my outline and research process by applying this template. It is a more productive part of my process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
