It might look like a simple step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a solid working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600% by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same procedure for every new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, since I know the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I had actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so I put off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea about what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time because I’d set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to the way I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off until I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I have actually overhauled my outline and research process by using this template. It’s a more effective part of my procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, too.
