It may look to be a simple step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a strong working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600% by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same process for every new article I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, because I understand the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I had really planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to have the outline done, so I put the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea about what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time since I had set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally do the job, and that I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I frequently put off these things until I am drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and research process by using this template. It’s a more effective part of the procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
