It might look to be a simple step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a solid working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could accelerate his writing process ~600 percent by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same procedure for every new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point using a few notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other nicely, because I know the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I had actually planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so I put off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea about what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time because I had put myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and that I was tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline properly. I often put these things off till I’m drafting, which is when I must be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and research process by applying this template. It is a more productive part of my procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, too.
