It may seem to be a simple step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a strong working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his composing process ~600 percent by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same procedure for every new article I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line with a few notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, since I understand the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I had really planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so that I set the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a good idea of what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time because I’d put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off till I’m drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and research procedure by using this template. It is a more productive part of my process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
