It might seem to be an easy step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a solid working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his composing procedure ~600 percent by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same process for every single new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line using a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other nicely, because I know the structure of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I had actually planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so I set off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea about what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time since I’d set myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and that I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I often put off these things until I’m drafting, which is when I must be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It is a more productive part of the procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, too.
