It may look like a simple step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a solid working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could accelerate his composing process ~600% by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same process for every new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line using a few notes about what I need to write in that segment. From the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, since I understand the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I had really planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so I put the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea of what each section would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time since I had set myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to how I normally work, and that I was tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline correctly. I often put these things off till I’m drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have actually coined my outline and study procedure by using this template. It is a more effective part of my procedure now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
