It may seem to be a simple step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to get a solid working title and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing process ~600 percent by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same process for every new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, because I understand the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I had actually planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so I set the draft off for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time because I had set myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally work, and that I had been tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I often put off these things till I’m drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve really coined my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It is a more effective part of the process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
