It might look like an easy step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a solid working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing process ~600 percent by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same process for every single new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, since I know the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I had actually planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to have the outline done, so that I put off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each section would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time because I’d put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I often put these things off until I am drafting, which is when I must be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve really coined my outline and research process by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of the process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
