It may seem to be an easy step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a solid working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing process ~600 percent by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same process for every single new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point using a few notes about what I need to write in that segment. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, because I understand the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d really planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so I set off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea of what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time since I’d set myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I often put these things off until I’m drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and study process by using this template. It is a more effective part of the procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, also.
