It may look to be a simple step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to get a strong working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600 percent by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same procedure for every new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point with a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, because I know the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d actually planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so that I put off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea of what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time since I had put myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and that I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I often put off these things until I am drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I have really coined my outline and research process by using this template. It is a more productive part of my procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
