family vacation planner template
It may look to be a simple step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a strong working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing process ~600 percent by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same process for every new article I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown files, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point with a few notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, because I know the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I had actually planned to do a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so that I put the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each section would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time since I’d put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and I was tempted a few times to avoid the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline properly. I often put these things off till I am drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I have actually coined my outline and study procedure by using this template. It’s a more effective part of the process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
