It may seem to be a simple step. Just open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a strong working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600% by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same procedure for every new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of every list to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point with a few notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, since I know the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I had really planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so I put the draft off for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea about what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time because I’d set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a few times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline correctly. I often put off these things until I am drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have actually overhauled my outline and study process by using this template. It’s a more effective part of the process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
