It may look like a simple step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a strong working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his writing procedure ~600% by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same procedure for every single new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line with a few notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, because I understand the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I had actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so that I put the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time because I’d put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and that I had been tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I often put off these things until I’m drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have really coined my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of the procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
