It might look like a simple step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a solid working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his writing process ~600 percent by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line with a few notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, since I understand the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I had actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so that I put off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a good idea about what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time since I had put myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally work, and I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I often put off these things until I am drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and study procedure by using this template. It’s a more effective part of my process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, too.
