It might look like a simple step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to get a strong working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600 percent by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same procedure for every new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line using a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, because I understand the structure of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d actually planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so I set off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a good idea of what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time because I’d set myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different process to the way I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things till I am drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and study process by using this template. It is a more productive part of my process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
