It might look to be a simple step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a strong working title and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his composing procedure ~600 percent by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every single new article I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point with a few notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, since I know the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d really planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so that I put off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea about what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time because I’d put myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally do the job, and that I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I often put off these things till I am drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have actually coined my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It is a more productive part of the process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
