It might look to be a simple step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a strong working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could accelerate his composing process ~600% by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same process for every new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, since I understand the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I’d really planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so that I put off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea of what each section would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time since I’d set myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and that I was tempted a few times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things till I am drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have actually overhauled my outline and study process by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of my process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
