It may seem to be an easy step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a solid working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his writing process ~600% by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same procedure for every single new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other nicely, since I know the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I had really planned to do a complete rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so I set the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea of what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time since I had set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to the way I normally work, and I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put off these things till I am drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and research process by applying this template. It is a more productive part of the procedure now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
