It might look to be an easy step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a solid working title and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his writing procedure ~600% by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every single new article I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point with a few notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, because I know the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d really planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so I put the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea of what each section would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time because I had put myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and I had been tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put these things off until I am drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve really coined my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It is a more effective part of my procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, too.
